While South Africa and South Korea battled it out on the pitch, a very different showdown was unfolding in the stands – and one cameraman captured every painfully awkward second.

It all happened during South Africa’s match against South Korea in Monterrey, Mexico, on June 24, when television cameras swept across the stands and landed on a group of fans proudly waving South African flags and dancing together.

At first, there was nothing unusual about the .

But as the camera lingered, the man standing between two women glanced down at his phone. The woman beside him appeared to catch a glimpse of the screen before he quickly slipped the device back into his pocket.

Seconds later, the atmosphere appeared to shift.

The footage was later shared on social media with the caption: “Wait for it… I can’t believe the cameraman caught this moment.”

Squabble in the stands

The pair, believed by many viewers to be a couple, appeared to start arguing as he repeatedly shook his head while she nodded in response. As the exchange continued, the woman became visibly frustrated while the man casually continued eating from a cardboard container.

The heated discussion grew increasingly awkward when the woman briefly lifted the flag to shield them from view. Moments later, the man – visibly irritated – continued to dance in place – spitting words at her – and the conversation showed no signs of ending.

Eventually, the woman dropped back into her seat, still looking furious, while the man remained on his feet, repeatedly turning around as the apparent disagreement continued.

Dismissing her fury, he even turned to the woman who was standing at his other side and fed her from his container.

‘How can I file a divorce for someone else?’

The clip quickly spread across social media, attracting millions of views as online users tried to work out exactly what had happened during the exchange.

Many became convinced the woman had spotted something suspicious on the man’s phone, with theories ranging from a dating app to messages from another woman or even bets placed on the match.

“How can I file a divorce for someone else?” one X user joked.

“WhatsApp message killed the vibe. ‘Mistress’ saw him on TV and was like ‘I see you baby,” a second wrote, while another shared, “Mood went from 101 to 0 in a split sec.”

Others focused less on the couple and more on the television cameraman, joking that he seemed unusually invested in capturing every awkward second.

“The cameraman was so invested,” one viewer wrote, while another shared, “Camera man is nosy.”

‘Must be the same Coldplay cameraman’

Another compared the moment to one of last summer’s biggest viral stories: “Must be the same Coldplay cameraman.”

The joke referenced the infamous kiss-cam moment at a Coldplay concert in in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the company’s head of HR, Kristin Cabot, were unexpectedly shown embracing before quickly trying to hide from the camera.

The awkward exchange prompted Coldplay frontman Chris Martin to joke from the stage: “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”
