Ahmed al-Ahmed, the civilian hero who risked his life to disarm a gunman during the tragic Bondi Beach attack, has spoken publicly for the first time from his hospital room. In a moving video message, the 43-year-old expressed heartfelt thanks and leaned on his faith. “I appreciate the efforts of everyone,” he stated. “May Allah reward you and grant you wellbeing. God willing, we will return to you with joy.” His words also revealed the personal toll, as he asked for the prayers of his mother, whom he called “the apple of my eye.”
Video of the incident shows al-Ahmed’s incredible bravery. Amidst the chaos, he used a vehicle as a shield, approached an alleged shooter from behind, and engaged in a physical fight to seize the attacker’s rifle. He was successful but not before being shot twice, wounds for which he is currently receiving treatment at St George Hospital. His actions during the Hanukkah celebration, which left 15 people dead, are widely believed to have prevented further casualties.
The nation’s leaders have made a point to honor him personally. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited, praising his “inspiring” courage. NSW Premier Chris Minns posted a photo with al-Ahmed, labeling him a hero. The Governor-General thanked him on behalf of the monarchy.
Notably, former PM John Howard emphasized that al-Ahmed’s selfless act as a Muslim Australian serves as a profound reminder of the country’s shared values.
