After spending nearly four months in the hospital, Christina Applegate has made a striking return to the public eye with a new video revealing how she looks today.
Christina Applegate has spent decades in the public eye, from her breakout role as Kelly Bundy on Married…with Children to her impressive comedic performances in films like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Bad Moms.
In recent years, however, the 54-year-old actor has faced a very different reality off-screen.
According to TMZ and several other outlets, The Married…with Children star spent nearly four months in hospital before finally returning home this summer, leaving fans waiting for the day they would see her again.
It’s another difficult chapter in a health journey Applegate has never tried to soften for the public, one that stretches back to her 2021 diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.
MS, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, is a disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, leading to unpredictable symptoms that can vary significantly from person to person.
By the time the Emmy-winning actor received answers, the neurological disease had already started changing her physical abilities.
Christina Applegate shares health update amid hospitalization
Applegate was filming the final season of Dead to Me when she was diagnosed, forcing production to pause while she received treatment. She ultimately returned to finish the series despite the disease’s growing impact.
Speaking with the New York Times, Applegate said many people around her hoped treatment would quickly restore her health, though she understood that reality looked very different.
“There was the sense of, ‘Well, let’s get her some medicine so she can get better,’” she said, adding,”And there is no better.”
‘Life isn’t wrapped up with a bow’
In the years since, Applegate has spoken candidly about losing abilities she once took for granted, while resisting attempts to turn her experience into a neatly packaged story about overcoming illness.
“My life isn’t wrapped up with a bow,” she told People in February while discussing her bestselling memoir, “You with the Sad Eyes.”
“People’s lives, sorry for lack of a better term, f***ing suck sometimes. So, I’m being as honest and raw as I possibly can,” she shared, adding that much of her day is spent in bed because movement causes pain.
Just weeks later, Applegate’s health once again pulled her away from public life.
‘Getting stronger’
Her first message to worried fans arrived April 20, but Applegate herself was nowhere in the picture.
Instead, her Instagram post showed a white “Kissy Kissy” coffee cup resting on top of her memoir as she addressed the concern surrounding her hospitalization.
“Thank you for the outpouring of love and well wishes. Health issues are a constant for me, but I’m a strong chick and I’m getting stronger and better every day,” she wrote April 20.
“I’m taking a moment to focus on my health, but I’ll be back with more to say soon enough,” she added.
That return would take months.
Released from hospital
By August, Applegate was finally home following a hospital stay that had stretched from the spring into the summer, with a source telling People she was “doing very well.”
Her 15-year-old daughter, Sadie Grace, made sure her mother knew exactly how she felt about having her back.
Applegate later shared a photo of the decorations waiting at home, including a colorful banner spelling out, “Yay, you’re home. Happy day ho…”
“Meant to post this a while ago. My kid is so my kid hahah,” she captioned the Sept. 14 post.
Yet even after letting followers glimpse her homecoming, Applegate remained behind the camera.
That changed on Sept. 21.
New do, ‘new weird spot’ on cheek
Wearing a black printed hoodie over a gray and black tank with jeans and a gold crescent moon necklace, Applegate – noticeable slimmer from early 2026 – smiled and posed for a short Instagram video showing off her brightly colored blonde hair.
She also drew attention to a dark area visible on her cheek with the same humor that has frequently accompanied her public discussions of difficult moments.
“Fresh hair color, new weird spot on my cheek haha thank you [stylist Dave Stanwell] for brightening up my cloudy day,” Applegate wrote. “Love you and love to you all out there.”
After months without seeing the actor on camera, followers quickly filled the comments with messages welcoming her back, while several famous friends joined them.
“You are truly powerful,” wrote Henry Winkler, the legendary actor best known as “Fonzie.”
Golden Globe-winning actor Octavia Spencer and Bravo-verse star Andy Cohen responded with fire emojis, while Ken Jeong, comedian and The Masked Singer panelist, offered some hearts.
